In this new edition of the World Responsible Tourism Day in Spain, the Spanish Centre of Responsible Tourism – CETR and the Spanish Tourism Professionals Association – AEPT, would like to broaden our horizons. While the last year theme was the relationship between tourism and climate change, this year the International Coalition of Responsible Tourism proposed to focus on the Islands, all the islands of the world, as a laboratory of sustainable tourism.
The fragility of their ecosystems, their greater or less geographic isolation, their beauty that excites the global tourism industry, their close and complicated relationship with the sea, their limits of growth, their connectivity and sustainability of transport, their value as carriers of myths and legends, the delicate balance between the cultural and natural heritage … all these and other issues make the islands an ideal theme for technical reflection and encouraging discussion on the future of sustainable tourism.
Therefore, the organizers want to invite you to the World Responsible Tourism Day that will be held on June 3, 2013 in the Colon Tourism Centre of Madrid at 18.30.
The session will begin with a few welcoming words from the President of AEPT, D. Andrés Encinas. As for the panorama of experiences and initiatives on islands around the world, they count on the following speakers:
José María de Juan, Director of KOAN Consulting and Vice President of EARTH-European Alliance for Responsible Tourism and Hospitality, who will act as a moderator and will present some key points of diverse experiences of Sustainable Tourism on Islands, based on referential projects in La Romana-Bayahibe (Dominican Republic), Sao Tome and Principe, and the island of Orango (Guiné Bissau).
Álvaro Sánchez Serrano, President of SoliDive (Solidarity Diving), who will speak on: “Solidarity diving: another way to dive and practice responsible tourism”, a new initiative of responsible and sustainable tourism and cooperation for development in the Dominican Republic.
Finally, Estibaliz Lopez-Samaniego, Responsible of Technical Area of “Vertidos Cero” association will give a talk on“Western Canary Islands: A laboratory for sustainable practices” explaining why the Islands are a perfect environment for the implementation of practical measures of sustainability to generate a value added as a nature destination.
It will be an ideal occasion share our experiences, exchange views and discuss. It will finish, as it is their tradition, with a time of personal interaction and cordial networking accompanied by a trade fair cocktail.
We are looking to seeing you on that day because only together we can make tourism industry more responsible.
The team of the Spanish Center for Responsible Tourism and the Board of AEPT.
