The European Conference on “European Realities of Responsible Tourism” organized by the European network EARTH (European Alliance for Responsible Tourism and Hospitality), will be held on Monday afternoon, 2nd of December 2013, in Brussels.
The event will be divided into three main parts. The first will be dedicated to the presentation of experiences of responsible tourism in Europe. The topics discussed will include the following: Responsible Tourism in Italy, Corporate Social Responsibility, tools for a Responsible Touristic Development, Coastal Tourism and the role of Migrants in Tourism, the links between Fair Tourism and Fair Trade, the Social economy in Responsible Tourism, SMEs and their responsibility regarding Responsible Tourism, and finally, the Management of Sustainable Tourism Projects (PM4SD). EARTH’ members and experts as Mauro Marrocu from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council will share their experiences about this topic.
The following part will be dedicated to the accessibility of the various sectors; social, responsible and sustainable tourism. International experts will be able to present their vision and experience regarding these issues. The President of the International Social Tourism Organization (ISTO), Jean- Marc Mignon, newly elected member of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), will present the requests of social tourism needed to improve accessibility. In addition, Anna Grazia Laura, president of the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT), will explain how an improved access to touristic products and services can be of great benefit to all. Cathrine Schwenoha, sustainable tourism and education project manager of the NGO Naturefriends International will also share its requests concerning accessibility in tourism. In addition, the European network NESCTouR will present its opinion. Finally, EARTH will share its thoughts regarding the ability with which responsible tourism may be adopted in the hands of citizens, travelers and tourists.
EARTH chose to focus on accessibility in tourism not only due to the importance the matter itself, but also because the European Commission celebrates the “European Tourism Day “ in Brussels, on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 and is also devoted to this theme. In addition, the European Day of Disabled Persons will follow the «European Realities of responsible tourism» on the 3nd December.
In the third and final part of the event, the European institutions will present their actions, policies and activities held in support and promotion towards a responsible and sustainable tourism at a European level.
EARTH will, in closing, present its memorandum; a document prepared to assert the demands for a greater role in the principles of responsible tourism in European policies. The half-day will end with a discussion and debate among the stakeholders and the assembly.
