| Profile | Agir pour un Tourisme Responsable (ATR) has been created in 2004 by adventure tour-operators, aiming to gather the French actors involved in responsible tourism and to promote responsible travels. The association has developed and manages a certification program called “Towards Sustainable Tourism”. Designed for tour operators, the credibility of the scheme is now well recognized, being the certification program nationally considered as the French reference on sustainable tourism. The certification is awarded after the approval of a third party (AFNOR Certification). AFNOR audits tourism operators on an annual basis and confirms that all the criteria – including 25 standards – are being met. “Towards Sustainable Tourism” certification has a 12-months validity, therefore tour operators are required a constant commitment for ongoing certifications. Due to the close collaboration between ATR Tour Operators and their respective travel agencies, successful implementations of sustainable practices within the sector have been experienced, helping moving towards the goal of responsible tourism. In 2014, ATR gathered 13 tour operators, nine of which are certified. Each year these tour operators send about 200.000 travelers in more than 80 countries. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the association has decided to promote its 10 victories and to honour its achievements in gathering most of the actors involved in responsible tourism and to increase the influence of responsible tourism outside and inside France. |
